When someone mentions ten percent off, I’m not that impressed. In fact, my husband gets ten percent off with his employee discount, but we still shop elsewhere because we can do it cheaper! Unless you are spending a lot of money, ten percent isn’t that much.
But when you mention saving ten bucks altogether, you’ve got my attention. Here are a few ways you can save ten dollars today.
- Switch your prescription. If you are renewing it anyway, you may be able to save up to ten bucks; call around and see who has it for cheap. Keep in mind that switching to a generic is even cheaper. I saved my aunt over $100 by switching from one bone medication to another.
- Make it yourself. If it’s a coffee, or a lunch out, or a housewarming gift, or anything else, you can probably make it yourself rather than spend up to $10 on it.
- Borrow. Instead of purchasing new books or movies or music, borrow them from friends or the library. Depending upon how much you typically buy, you could save yourself hundreds of dollars a month! Remember that many libraries also offer inter-library loans if you can’t find what you are looking for. Just give the librarian the title of the book and the author. It may take you a bit longer to get it, but it will be free and well worth the wait. If you have a local bookstore that accepts credit, you could also exchange books for new ones.
- Rent. This is a great strategy for everything from suits to textbooks to videos.
- Swap. Host a swap party with friends to get rid of things you don’t need and to get things you do need. We bring our old items to our monthly family game night to swap and get rid of as prizes, but you could easily do this with housewares, clothing, whatever you want. Have a party to go to? Host a swap for a new outfit and save yourself lots of money.
- Shop used. You don’t need everything to be brand new, after all. Try Craigslist, Good Will, and other thrift stores. Our local homeschool group has its own classifieds as well and we have gotten everything from free books to clothing through it; see if yours does, too. You can even get prom dresses for cheap this way!
